For such a seemingly simple vegetable, there is so much that goes into the planting, growing, harvesting and packaging of a potato. Potatoes are grown around the country and the world, however, in North America, Idaho is the largest producer of the tuber with Washington a close second. In Idaho, potato planting takes place in the spring right after the last frost and the seed is just a potato tuber cut into smaller pieces. Have a potato sprouting in your kitchen? Plant it in some dirt! That sprout will soon be a potato plant. After just a few weeks, seedlings will emerge with tubers beginning to take shape below the earth within about a month. Stay tuned for more fun potato facts! Thu, 27 Jan 2011 18:26:20 UTC Last Year's Maui Trip Winner Sent Us A Few Words About Her Recent Trip To Maui! http://www.klondikebrands.com/blog/index/detail/id/58 I am last year's grand prize winner of a spa vacation to Maui, round trip airfare for two, hotel accommodations at a 4 1/2 star hotel and a car rental. We were greeted at the airport with orchid leis, and treated to a luau on the beach. My journey started on April 29th, 2010 when I got a phone call from Barbara at Potandon Produce informing me that I had won this great trip. Of course, I didn't believe her, I thought it was a time share thing. But it was true. The funny thing about this is, I only went to www.klondikebrands.com to print a coupon, and while there, I saw a contest, so I entered. You were only allowed to enter one time so I completely forgot that I even entered, until the phone call...and I won out of over 10,000 entries. Many people tell me I am lucky, but I feel I am blessed. Ever since I got this great news, I feel my life has gone in an upward spiral. I got inspired to lose weight (I lost 45 lbs. to date), I got a job on the web that allows me to work from home, and I met so many wonderful people through this journey. My husband and I had such a fantastic time on this trip of a lifetime to paradise. Everything was great! We had a buffet breakfast every morning overlooking the Pacific Ocean, our room was to die for, the staff at the hotel couldn't have been nicer. I even got to go to a luau for my birthday...what a great night that was! The entertainment and the food was great, plus we got to meet some really nice people. From the bottom of my heart, I want to thank Steve Ottum (Potandon's COO) for sponsoring our trip and Barbara for calling me with the good news and for being so sweet every time I talked to her. I would also like to thank everyone who was genuinely happy for me when I told them I won this trip, and believe me, I old everyone I came in contact with. I would also like to thank Collin (and crew) at Hip@Save.com, for without her posting the link to print a coupon for potatoes, I would never be telling you this story. Thanks to Doug, our travel agent at Hess Travel, for his help in planning the details of the trip. I also want to thank my family and friends for all their support in this last year, especially my wonderful husband, Robert.
